This research-based dance theatre piece, directed by Zoobin Surty, explored perceptions of domestic violence in South Asian and British communities, and highlighted the experiences of LGBTQIA+ survivors through a fusion of contemporary and Indian classical dance. The event included a feedback session to engage the audience in the ongoing development of the work. The production was supported by Shantona Women’s Centre, The Community Wellbeing Hub, West Yorkshire Police, and Arts Council England, with contributions from a talented creative team and dancers.

Mind The Dance

Description

Embark on an extraordinary journey of exploration and emotion with MIND THE DANCE, a captivating triple bill by Karma Dance. This collaboration brings together Western contemporary dance with traditional Indian artistry to delve into themes of individuality, multiculturalism, and the profound language of silence.

‘HOme to my MOther’ takes you through an auto-ethnographical experience, delving into mental health struggles and the tender bond between a child and their mother. ‘Hindividuality’ unravels the essence of human existence, questioning societal norms that define us based on gender, colour, sexuality, and language, while ‘Silenced’ explores the hidden symphony of inner sounds, arising from choreographer Zoobin Surty’s personal struggle with hearing loss.

MIND THE DANCE Research & Development

Performed at Riley Theatre, NSCD

HOme to my MOther

Performed at Seven Arts & Leeds Playhouse

HOme to my MOther uses Zoobin Surty's personal sexperiences of childhood abuse and bullying as a platform for an auto-ethnographic dance journey of artistic freedom and collaboration, on which I am joined by my fellow artists, to demonstrate other colours of emotion to deconstruct new choreographies. A interdisciplinary contemporary dance collaboration that derived from mental health and trauma that resonates with the universe.
